Dive into Reading
Elementary Education, Reading
with Digraphs (sec. 1)
About the Course
$20 per week
Prerequisite: For this class, students will need to know their letter sounds a-z.
In this course students will learn consonant digraphs, two letters that make one sound, and apply this to encoding (spelling) and decoding (reading) words.
This is a 4 week course that includes two different classes per week focusing on a specific digraph. This is a multi-sensory class where students will learn hand movements and letter skywriting to assist in their learning.
Classes will offer similar structures from week to week and focus on various phonics skills to ensure students feel confident in taking what they learned and applying it outside of class. Students will gain confidence in reading, writing words and writing sentences with digraphs. Monday: We will review letter sounds as a warm up. Then, we will go over what a digraph consists of. Students will learn a new digraph and do an activity that focuses on listening to words and practice identifying if those words have that specific digraph. This activity helps in building students' phonemic awareness, which is an important skill in learning how to read fluently.
Wednesday: Students will read words with the newly learned digraph in a decodable text. We will write sentences with digraphs in it. In addition, we will practice reading real and nonsense words. We will focus on the most common digraphs: sh, ch, th, and wh Week 1: sh Week 2: wh Week 3: ch Week 4: th
Paper and pencil or a whiteboard and a wipe off marker.
I will be including a google classroom with materials for review. It is not required to print out activities for the class, but rather a supplement.
Looking forward to seeing and working with your child(ren) in class!
